Identify one client group that reflects your current ambition within the graphic design area :

Publishers -

What skills/interests do you have and how do they relate to the needs of your client group?

At this point I am very interested in all aspects of book design, from editorial layout, to cover design, to book binding. I am very into book binding and find that this area of publishing fits perfectly with the craft of book binding. Another aspect I enjoy about publishing is the print side, I really enjoy how publishing has a tactile aspect, you can touch it and apply different processes, and have to consider things such a print process and stock.

What skills are needed and what skills do you want to develop?

Skills that are needed in the client group of Publishing would be a strong understanding and grasp on layout. An understanding and confidence with print and publsihing tends to be print jobs, although an undertanding of digital would also be useful as there is now a digital side to publishing. I want to develop my layout skills. I feel I am comfortable with layout, but I feel there is more I could learn about the history of layout and rules, so once I fully understand the rules I can be more playful with my designs and break them. I want to develop my print knowledge by applying what I already know to an actuall print job through real printers to see if I am comfortable with the process. I also would like the opertunity to develop the skill of working with alot of given body, as this is what happens in editorial you are provided with the body copy, this would be something I would enjoy as coming up with what to write usually slows me down a lot, so to be provided with it would be an interesting experience.

What are your professional/creative aims and how do they meet the needs of the client group?

My Professional/ creative aims are to create book covers for a range of different books, create editorial work for fashion and creative magazines, and also create self published books. I want to create aestheically pleasing and beautiful book covers and layouts so that people want to read. I also want to create clever concept driven books of my own which would get independantly published. I want people to want to read and be enticed to read by looking at my design work. This would relate to the client group of publshing as I would be promoting and selling the books through the design work.

Through this year I have realised how much I enjoy editorial work, I love the viriety it brings to you. I think I would like to work in a design studio that has a strong focus on publishing, but as I do still enjoy other aspects of graphic design I wouldnt want to work in a design studio that only does publishing. I need to find a studio that has a balance or has a publishing sideline project like Catalogue or Made.
